Eleanor Roosevelt, wife and cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt, meets lesbian Lorena Hickok, an AP reporter. They maintain an extramarital affair for 30 years. |

Vanessa Williams, the first black Miss America, relinquishes her crown after Penthouse magazine announced its plans to publish lesbian-themed photos of her in its September issue. Prior to entering the Miss America contest Williams had certified having committed no embarrassing acts of "moral turpitude." |
