625 BC Greek poet Sappho born on Lesbos island.
1649 In Plymouth, Massachusetts, Mary Hammon and Goodwife Norman are charged with committing "lude behavior upon a bed." Ultimately, Norman is convicted of lesbianism and forced to issue a public confession.
1932 Eleanor Roosevelt, wife and cousin of Franklin D. Roosevelt, meets lesbian Lorena Hickok, an AP reporter. They maintain an extramarital affair for 30 years.
23 Jul 1984 Vanessa Williams, the first black Miss America, relinquishes her crown after Penthouse magazine announced its plans to publish lesbian-themed photos of her in its September issue. Prior to entering the Miss America contest Williams had certified having committed no embarrassing acts of "moral turpitude."
